The SAMRO Music Bursaries are the most substantial awards in music study in Southern Africa. Bursaries are open to citizens of South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland. Applicants should be registered for a music degree/ diploma at a South African University in 2014. Applications will only be accepted once students have proof of registration for 2014.
The following bursaries are on offer:
1. General Music Study: Western Art or Jazz Popular or African Indigenous Music genres (R10 000 each) available to students in their 2nd years
2. Music Education OR Community Music Study (R10 000 each) available to students majoring in of these specialized courses in their 3rd and 4th years
3. Music Technology OR Music Business (R10 000 each) available to students majoring in one of these specialized courses in their 3rd and 4th years
4. Performance Study: Western Art or Jazz Popular or African Indigenous Music genres (R10 000 each) available to students majoring in performance study in their 3rd and 4th years
5. Composition Study (R10 000 each) available to students majoring in music composition in their 3rd, 4th and postgraduate years
6. Indigenous African Music Research (R10 000 each) for post-graduate research students at Honours, Masters or Doctoral level

SAMRO OVERSEAS SCHOLARSHIPS COMPETITION for COMPOSERS 2014

The SAMRO Overseas Scholarships is a competition held every year. These Awards currently rotate in the following four-year cycle:
- 2014 Composers
- 2015 Singers
- 2016 Instrumentalists
- 2017 Keyboard Players
The Scholarships, one for Western Art music and one for Jazz/ Popular music, are for applicants who have already obtained a degree or equivalent diploma in music, or who are in their final year of such degree or equivalent diploma. The value of the scholarships is R160 000 plus travel allowance of up to R10 000 in each of the genres.
